I went out of town for the weekend and when I returned. One of my Shubunkins fins had been eaten and torn apart. She is still alive I put her in a small holding tank to see if she will recover. They have been in the pond for 6 months together with no problems. Any ideas?? I have a 750 gallon pond with Koi, Shubunkin and Comets.

Answer: There are a couple of possibilities here...it could be the first indication of a water quality problem or the fish could have been hurt during spawning.

The best thing to do for the fish is to add Melafix and Pond Salt to the water to aid healing and prevent secondary infection.

The water in the pond needs to be tested to make sure ammonia and/or nitrites are not present and causing the fish disease called "Fin Rot".
